Subject: WTF is facebook? Thu Nov 06, 2008 8:07 pm
Someone who I haven't really kept in touch with for a while sent me an "invitation" to join facebkk and his circle of friends. Being the polite chap I am, I did so.
What is that all supposed to be? It seems the primary topic of discussion is joining, iviting other people to join, wondering when people who joined are going to respond to your "be my friend" message.
I thought this place was a waste of time, but that...that makes this place look like a mensa society meeting.
Am I missing some deeper levels there or what?

Of my friends, co-workers, and colleagues (many of whom are attached in some way to higher education), I am about the only one I know who has resisted all attempts to join the FB crowd.
I feel I am a better person for it.

When I signed up I think I sent an invitation to "be my friend" to everyone in my address book, which somehow includes everyone who I ever sent an e-mail to...even if it was a CC in some bad joke chain letter. I am getting a lot of "who the fuck are you"? messages this evening...well...more than I usually get.

it's a kid thing, and I just don't get it.
lots of times, like myspace, it's just a place to post drunk pictures of yourself, and your friends.
One of my friends showed my one of my former cashiers facebook, and I was shocked at what I saw. Turned on, sure, but mostly shocked.

MySpace = Tweens/Teens (and still the music/entertainment industry, for some reason) Facebook = High school, college, recent college grads LinkedIn = "adults" (for lack of a better term)
They are all essentially the same evolving animal. Facebook used to be exclusive to academia - you had to have a .edu email address to sign up. A couple of years ago, they got rid of that requirement and it opened up a flood gate of people wanting to be a part of. The reality is that FB is sometimes the ONLY way people stay in touch. I used to say the same thing about email - that if I had to physically write a letter or call someone, I would keep in touch with so many fewer people. Well, nowadays, there are many people who don't even use email - it is text messages, Facebook chat and the like.

So I am still signed on to this thing...and check every now and again, and I still don't get it. I see some of my friends document every moment of their life...some using their phone or PDA lest we miss out on the news they had a firm bowel movement, their cat shit on the kitchen table, of they went to work today. I am just at a loss as to how anyone can get so wrapped up in this. I saw one of my "friends" commented that she was "sitting down to eat lunch at work". WTF???

Great op-ed about "the Twitter" in today's Washington Post ("The Tedium Is the Message") summarized as follows:
"Technology -- computers, cellphones, PDAs -- has given us the tools to overcommunicate a lot of uninteresting stuff. Just because we have these tools, do we need to yammer and hammer unrelentingly?"

Clearly, the author of said article found clothier's Twitter page.....or this site???

How can you accuse the site in question of yammering unrelentingly when the most brilliant post there in the last few years painted a perfect picture of restraint and minimalism? JohnA's wordless 1-2-3 punch of photos of his cryovac encased WalMart Beef Tenderloin-the perfectly seasoned uncooked Beef sided with a gorgeous Idaho baker-and the glorious finished product stands testament to the theory that "less is more".
I hail you JohnA as TOOS' anti-clothier. If in the new owner of the site's mind clothier was the poison then JohnA is definitiely the antidote.

so, in the last week I've been invited to join facebook by:
my mom
my aunt
my sister
2 old high school friends
an old college friend (who is now producing "fairly oddparents" on nick)
and the guy who's blog I post to on the local newspaper.
now I'm thinking about it.

pow, you ignorant slut. The above is the very definition of "Road Food." (Well, that and anything served at Longhorn Steakhouse.) Everyone knows that.

I didn't know which way to go with this. The first part screams for a Budweiser "Real Men of Genius" commercial. But, the second sentence, for some reason, evokes this....

Slightly out-of-season, but you still get for pulling a completely random movie quote from a completely throw-away line inside a post.

How the Hell did this thread get off topic? Weren't we discussing the irrefutable fact that if ANYONE could hold in a bong hit for over two minutes, that it would be Michael "Tokemaster" Phelps?
