This could be the most clever intergenerational marketing strategy in pop music history. Axl, and whoevers in the band now, may be plotting to have this albums release actually coincide with the outbreak of Democracy in China, or maybe they're just trying to rope in the children of their original hair heavy fans thus doubling thier fan base.
Exclusive release through Wal-Mart?
These lads have clearly maintained their rebellious edge well into middle age.

Guns N' Roses in talks for exclusive album release Sat Aug 16, 2008 12:46am EDT Email | Print | Share| Reprints | Single Page | Recommend (16) [-] Text [+]
NEW YORK (Billboard) - The June leak of nine allegedly "mastered, finished" tracks from Guns N' Roses' long-delayed "Chinese Democracy" spurred a renewed round of speculation about whether the Axl Rose-led band will finally release the 14-years-in-the-making album.
But some concrete signs are finally emerging that the album's release could be imminent. That's because, according to sources, negotiations are under way for "Chinese Democracy" to come out as an exclusive at one of the big-box retailers -- either Wal-Mart or Best Buy.
Negotiations are also ongoing for conventional record company distribution, another source said.
Guns N' Roses is now managed by Irving Azoff's Front Line Management, and Azoff is a well-known proponent of issuing albums exclusively through retailers. He released the Eagles' "Long Road Out of Eden" through Wal-Mart, much to the chagrin of other merchants.
It's unclear who initiated the Guns N' Roses exclusive negotiations -- Front Line or Interscope, the band's label.
Representatives at Front Line and Interscope with knowledge of the situation couldn't be reached for comment. A Wal-Mart representative said the chain couldn't confirm this fall's exclusive album offerings. Best Buy representatives couldn't be reached for comment.

In an industry rife with self-indulgent shitheads Axl Rose is truly a standout. 14 years and counting to make an album?

I would think that Axl would refuse to allow the album to be sold at Walmart..................since they love to "slash" prices.

Now there is a line that would be a major puzzlement to the non-G'N'R fan.
Any band that can write a song like "I used to Love Her" can take as long as they want between albums and I'll still check it out.

Sorry dude, I totally agree, but we're hosed. That was an Izzy Stradlin penned homage to love. Poor Izz was the fist Gunner to get the ax.
Dennis Miller did a very funny bit once about how horrendously fucked up you'd have to be to get kicked out of G&R.
Personally I just respect the hell out a band that's comfortable doing Charles Manson covers.

I am a bit hazy on my GNR history, but didn't Izzy leave on his own? I thought it was the drummer dude who got canned for being too fucked up.
I had also read IZzy was part of some recent mini-tours that fractured versions of GNR had done in recent years. Any version without him involved would be like the partial versions of other great bands that tried to tour without key members.
I recall seeing Aerosmith at a local bar (it was a big one, but still a local bar) during their dark Joe Perry-less days. Look what happened when they were smart enough to get back together! I don't care for their music, but they sure have been a commercial hit.
Hey, look what I found. Gotta love the You Tubes!

That could be.
G&R can keep their solialist sympathizing mythical album. I'm keeping Izzy on frequent rotation.
