so I heard the tail end of a news story on the radio today, and I'd really like to hear the whole thing. The radio people said you can down load the story as a podcast on their website.
Here's my question:
I don't have a "pod".
Can I download it to my computer and listen to it that way, and then delete it? Or will it take up too much room on my hard drive? Or does it have to go direct to some sort of "pod"?

You can install ITunes, a free download, on your computer and download podcasts and listen on your computer. Becoming a pod person is not a requirement. I have a Pod, but mainly listen to podcasts on the computer. I listen to a lot of NPR shows...monitoring them for signs of a communist plot to take over this great country...and because the carguys make me laugh.

This should probably work without requiring you to download itunes:
Right-click on the link to the podcast file and then select "Save Target As" and select the location on your hard drive where you want to store the audio file (your desktop is a good choice). When the download completes, just double click the saved file on your desktop and it should play on your computer's default internal MP3 player, for example Windows Media Player. Once you're through listening just right-click the audio file again and delete the file.
These files are compressed like MP3s so they are usually pretty small and won't hog your computer's resources.

POW is correct...you can do it this way as well.
A nice feature of iTunes is the ability to "subscribe" to certain podcasts. These are downloaded automatically when you open Itunes.

And Agent 13 is correct that downloading itunes is a great no ipod necessary idea if you want to start either subscribing to or downloading lots of podcasts.

I was going to make some sort of "brokeback mountain" reference here, but I've never seen the movie, so feel free to insert your own homophobic joke in this space.
