Re: Most Costly Baseball Signing Ever
I am coach of my kid's little league team...yes...I realize how the thought of me having any, even a small one, role in shaping kids minds is scary...but...his team is the Orioles.
When ever I put on that Orioles hat I have an urge to throw a base or kick dirt on someone. I must be channeling old Earl.

As stated before I am youtube poor here at work so I'm not sure that this is exactly the right thing but based on the title it seems right. This link should take you to Mr. Weaver's finest moment answering fan's questions on a talk show.

Re: Most Costly Baseball Signing Ever
hey 13, perhaps this will make you feel better: last night at my younger kid's game, the Ump kicked his coach out of the game for arguing calls.
They are 8 & 9 year olds.
you're better then that, aren't you?

I have made my team go up and apologize to the umpires for questioning their calls. These kids are 7. I told them they don't even know which base to run to yet, so they need to shut their mouths and respect the umpires. A couple of parents didn't seem to care for that speech, but as old Earl would have said...fuck 'em.
As an aside, they asked all coaches to umpire one game this year. Being a rookie I signed up. Apparently all the veteran coaches just ignore this request. Anyway...I was not a good umpire. I know this. I advised both coaches I would be a bad umpire as I never did it before and have shitty eyesight. I did my best but actually had a few parents behind the back stop making "that should have been a ball"...or "that was a strike" comments from behind me. I never even looked back as I know I wouldn't have said anything appropriate for young kids to hear.
I did comment to one coach who took issue with the fact I wasn't calling balls and strikes loud enough for him to hear all the way in the dugout. I asked him do you really want me screaming STRIKE THREE in some 7 year old kids ear? WTF is wrong with some of these people. They have a bunch of kids who suck at a sport, and probably still need help wiping their asses, and they want them treated like pro atheletes.
Our team is having a lot of fun. We are okay...not great...but we are having fun. One parent asked me some questions about line up choices and my reply to him was a smile and a reminder that the forms for becoming a volunteer coach are available in the concession stand. The kids Mom has brought him to all games since we had that discussion.

So, did this work? If so, and if you want to take this a step further, here's my favorite managerial rant ever provided by then Cub manager Lee Elia.

It did work. Do you think that is real? If so, then my managerial style is VERY close to Mr. Weaver's, as he sounds drunk or high in that clip.

Who?
(come on...it really HAD to be said)
Other thoughts on this thread...
I am so pissed that I missed the opportunity to see Agent 13 either coach and/or umpire a Little League game during my recent visit to NY. I would have had a blast. I am sure that I wouldn't have been the first ever fan removed from the Little League fields of Greater Downtown Hooterville - but, I would have been the funniest...and would have had his kid rolling on the floor!
The Lee Elia rant maybe the best baseball rant of all-time. Coors would make a commercial out of it if they sponsored baseball.
